README for Martine Lunis
(She/ Her)
Martine (pronounced Mar-teen)
Lunis (pronounced “Loo-nes”) or the same way you’d pronounce Monday in Spanish (“Lunes”) if that’s easier!
At Cadence OneFive, my role is…
Project Manager- I’ll be primarily working with Marc and the Customer Success/ Revenue team to keep things running smoothly with our existing customers/partners and facilitate future customer growth.
Who am I?
Away from work
I’m originally from Columbia, Maryland but fell in love with Brooklyn, NY the summer after college. I’ve mostly been here ever since! I love being outside (especially in the summer) and exploring new parts of the city. Part of what I love is having parks, museums, festivals and all sorts of activities right outside my door so I do my best to take advantage.
I’m really interested in food, both cooking it and trying new restaurants. If you see a popular New York Time recipe, I’ve probably tried it out and if you’re ever looking for a food rec in the NYC area, I’ll probably have a suggestion for you!
I love plants and have lots of houseplants, though my love for them has occasionally outpaced my skill with some of the more finicky varieties. I’m also what I’d call an aspirational gardener- I share a plot with some neighbors but always plant less than I intend to. This might be the year I really dive in though!
At work
My career background has been pretty diverse. I started working in campaign management for NY local politics. Since then I’ve had roles in project management, staffing/ recruitment management and even event management. It’s always been important to me to do work that contributes to positive change. I eventually took the time to recenter my goals and shifted my focus back to social impact oriented fields, which brought me into climate. A few years ago I went back to school to support that shift and got my masters in Business for Social Impact and Sustainability.
Though my official title in my most recent roles have been as a project manager, I’ve realized that that’s functionally been my job for most of my career. I’ve always been good at tackling bigger or more long term puzzles, untangling the key elements and seeing it through til the resolution. Because of that, I’ve often ended up serving that role in the teams I’ve been a part of, both officially and unofficially.
Goals
Learning goals
I had an opportunity to learn a lot about electrification for single family, residential homes in my last position. I’m looking forward to expanding my knowledge and learning the ins and outs for large building decarbonization. I’m also looking forward to the skills and experience that will come with working one a larger scale.
Career goals
I’ve discovered a niche in project management that brings together a lot of my strengths, as well becoming the type of work that I’m excited to work on every day. I’d love to keep progressing on this track and potentially move up to managing a team, as the company continues to grow.
I’m also very committed to staying in a field that provides some sort of positive societal impact. I’ve learned that that’s an important part of what keeps me motivated and drives me to really stay committed to what I’m working on. With climate justice being such a significant and compounding issue to tackle, I’d like to continue making as much of an impact as I can within the field.
Ways of working together
I’m a big fan of finding a balance between collaboration and heads down time, depending on what type of problem we’re working on and other people’s work styles. I think there are definitely certain questions that benefit from brainstorming together and getting diverse perspectives. I appreciate that most in the ideation stage or when trying to work through a particular puzzle. Otherwise, I definitely value my heads down time and often feel most productive during it. I’m a morning person so I love when I can do any necessary syncing with team members earlier on during the day to get objectives laid out, and then have the afternoon clear to dive into project work on my own.
You can lean on me to…
help with talking through or sorting through problem solving. I’m good at thinking of different angles to approach a solution and exploring as many alternate options as possible. I’m also good at troubleshooting at the beginning of a plan or project and thinking through as many risks as possible, with their contingency plans.
How to support me as we work together
It’s really helpful to me if you’re as clear as possible with any asks or directives. I’ve gotten much better on getting clarification if needed, but ultimately I really benefit from a direct communication style.
Also, part of how I learn (and think) is by trying to get as big of a picture of the situation as possible, and then sorting through the important elements. Any extra background information or anything that provides additional context can be very helpful for me.
I also sometimes need a bit of extra time to master a new technical tool (I’m definitely the person that those pop up instructions and tool reminders were created for). Any patience with questions around that would be really appreciated!
How to support me as a person
Since I’ve been completely remote for the past few years, I’ve been trying to prioritize ways to stay active despite not walking to and from work anymore. Sometimes that means an exercise class in the early morning or a dance class in the evening. More often though, I’ll try to use most of my lunch break to take a quick walk. With that, I’d feel most supported if I could have about 30 minutes of heads up time if you want to sync in the afternoon. This isn’t a hard and fast rule for me and if we’re in the middle of a packed day or I have external meetings, those take precedence. Any consideration you can provide would be greatly appreciated though!
I’m my best self on a team when…
I feel prepared. I’m pretty comfortable speaking up during meetings and adding my perspective if it’s beneficial. I’d say this only changes if I feel like I’m playing catch up or trying to listen and get the lay of the land. While that usually doesn’t last for long as I get deeper into a project or subject, any info you can provide ahead of time to keep things up to speed would be particularly helpful for me.
Feedback preferences
I really value feedback and appreciate it the most if it comes up right away. I rather know there’s something I can improve on earlier versus later! I’m flexible as far as feedback methods go, though I do have a slight preference for a video call instead of an email, if time allows. I’ve noticed that in person feedback can give more room for tone in those sorts of conversations.
Technical preferences
I love organizing data and mapping out ideas for myself, so I’ve really enjoyed using any tools that help with that. I’m a fan of Asana (though I’ve used other workflow management tools that I’ve been happy with) and I find most of the Google Suite tools pretty intuitive. I also really like Figma for laying out a plan visually and organizing my thoughts. I’m very open to learning new tools as well.
Schedule and availability
I’m in EST and plan to work between 9am-5pm EST. I’m a morning person and try to schedule my meetings earlier in the day when possible, which also lets me set my objectives for the day or incorporate new info. My heads down time is normally in the afternoon, which helps me focus and power through any end of day slumps. I also try to take at least one walk around lunchtime, though if anyone ever wanted to coordinate a phone call during that time, I’d be very open to that. It’s primarily my attempt to get some exercise while working from home! My goal is to take my break around 2pm, though that can definitely vary on the needs of the day.
